WCU Rolls in Win

The Golden Rams score 41 in victory over LIU Post.

The following is a press release from the West Chester University Athletic Department.

Junior Rondell White amassed a career-high 343 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns to lead host West Chester University to a 41-6 victory over visiting LIU Post in a PSAC Eastern Division clash Saturday afternoon at John A. Farrell Stadium.

West Chester (5-2, 3-1 PSAC East) scored 34 unanswered points to keep pace in the Eastern Division with a big showdown looming next Saturday at home against No. 16 Shippensburg on Homecoming. LIU Post (2-4, 1-3) never got much going for the exception of a scoring drive at the beginning of the second quarter that briefly made it 7-6.

White finished with 167 yards rushing and another 176 receiving, rushing for one TD and catching three TD strikes from quarterback Mike Mattei. White’s final TD of the afternoon with 3:03 left in the third quarter covered 89 yards.

White scampered into the end zone from 38 yards out with five minutes left in the first quarter to put the Golden Rams on top, 7-0. LIU Post responded with a 13-yard run from Anthony Brunetti at the beginning of the second quarter. However, place-kicker Tim Sternfeld, who booted two kickoffs out of bounds and left the game with an injury, missed the extra-point.

Tom Shrader, returning from a separated shoulder suffered in the first game of the season at Delaware, caught a TD pass in the back of the end zone five minutes before halftime to make it a 14-6 game. White then caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Mattei with 1:17 to go, and Shawn Leo added a 26-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to extend the hosts’ lead to 24-6 at the break.

White hauled in a 22-yard pass from Mattei, trapping the ball against his helmet in the back of the end zone, before sliding out of bounds to extend West Chester’s lead to 31-6 after halftime. Leo then nailed his second field goal of the afternoon from 27 yards away to push the lead to 34-6 with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Pioneers’ starting average field position in the second half was its own 18-yard line thanks to West Chester punter Rich Bruno dropping three punts inside the 5-yard line.

Mattei finished the day 11-for-26 for 263 yards and four touchdowns. He was not sacked, nor was he picked off Saturday. The Golden Rams rolled up 486 yards of total offense while its special teams forced a fumble and blocked a punt.

West Chester hosts Shippensburg on Homecoming next Saturday at John A. Farrell Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
