Chester County Solid Waste to Collect Hazardous Household Waste

A grant from the state allows the Solid Waste Authority to collect hazardous waste.

According to a press release, the Chester County Solid Waste Authority received a $74,939 grant to sponsor efforts in the county to collect household hazardous waste.

The grant was made available through the Department of Environmental Protection’s Small Business and Household Pollution Prevention Grant Program the press release says.

State Senator Andy Dinniman was instrumental in procuring the grant for Chester County.

“Proper disposal and management of household hazardous waste is a responsibility that we all share,” Dinniman said in the press release. “These collection events offer an easy, convenient and safe opportunity for families to appropriately dispose of everything from swimming pool chemicals to automotive products to household cleaners. I encourage everyone to take advantage of them in the coming months.”

The press release says that as part of the program the Solid Waste authority will hold collection events throughout the county.  And while the West Chester event isn't until October 8, the Solid Waste Authority will be collecting waste in Phoenixville on April 9.

According to the press release, items that will be accepted include: paint thinners, turpentine, oil-based paints, stains and varnish, swimming pool chemicals, weed killers, pesticides, rodent poison, joint and caulking compounds, asphalt sealers, septic tank degreasers, fuel additives, transmission/brake fluid, antifreeze, gasoline, kerosene, car batteries, drain openers, adhesives and solvents, mothballs, household cleaners, rechargeable batteries, mercury-bearing items and propane cylinders (under 20 lbs).

“Remember, if improperly disposed, these items do not just harm the environment, they can also pose serious health risks to your friends, family and neighbors,” Dinniman added in the press release. “I want to thank the Chester County Solid Waste Authority for holding these events.”
