Squash, Pears and Goat Cheese this Week at the Growers Market

A preview of what's in store this week at the West Chester Growers Market.

The following information comes from the West Chester Growers Market Blog.

Oh the joys of Autumn!  We're not officially in the Autumn season yet, but the temperatures have been more agreeable, apples are abundant and pumpkins are on the horizon. What a fun time of year!

The WCGM has everything you need to keep week days smooth and your weekends exciting!

Have you been dealing with Back-to-School transitions? Get plenty of fruits and vegetables on your next Market trip. On Sunday, wash and dry the produce and chop your veggies.  Keep them visible in your fridge so that you don't forget about them. Doing all the prep work ahead of time assures your family that healthy options are always available. Grab an apple and a bag of chopped veggies for lunch. Cut up an apple or pear and serve with almond butter for a nutritious and yummy after school snack (we won't judge you if you throw in a small handful of chocolate chips)!

Are you excited for tailgating and Football?  The WCGM can keep you stocked with meat for grilling, bread to to nosh on, salsa to dip in, and pastries for the after party!  Want to make it classy? Grab some wine, goat or sheep cheese, artisan bread and vegetables for an impressive weekend crudite.

And how can we leave out the many ways you can use APPLES this time of year? We're asking for YOUR apple recipes to share on the blog, newsletter and facebook. So PLEASE email us (wcgrowersmarket.blog@gmail.com) and you might be our next featured recipe!

Saturday is our MONTHLY FOOD DONATION!  Bring your canned good or donate market purchases to local food banks, so we can support our local community!

Farmer Ike's Pick of the Week: Crimson Crisp
These are very shiny and rock-hard to the touch. Fabulously flavorful, they make a great apple for snacking because of both their crunch and their lovely sweet flavor.

Farmer Ike originally planted these because he liked the description of the apples. From 30 original trees, 27 died from fireblight when they were 3 years old. "Well, that's that!" Farmer Ike thought, "So much for Crimson Crisp."
But then we got to try the fruit, and WOW! Ok, they were allowed a second go-'round, so he planted a bunch more trees, which have been producing faithfully and flavorfully ever since!
