WCU Students to Host Powder Puff Tournament

The event will benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand.

In their continuing efforts to raise funds and awareness in the battle against childhood cancer, West Chester University Students will host their annual Powder Puff Tournament to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the University’s Farrell Stadium.

The Powder Puff Tournament is an annual, campus wide event that takes place every April at West Chester University. The event was started 4 years ago by Resident Assistant, Kelly Dougherty. The event has fundraised and donated roughly $5,000 over the course of the past three years. This event allows the dorms/halls to participate by creating a team to compete in the tournament. Students running the tournament also recruit volunteers and donations from other organizations on campus.

In 2012, Greek Life, The Resident Hall Association, The On Campus Radio Station (WCUR) and numerous clubs will lend their support by attending and fundraising for the event. In addition to the friendly completion, various food and drinks will be offered to those in attendance as well as raffles, prizes and entertainment via male cheerleaders and a half time show.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $50 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 200 research projects nationally.
