West Chester University baseball head coach, Jad Prachniak, and field hockey head coach, Amy Cohen, were honored at the 109th annual Sports Awards Dinner sponsored by the Philadelphia Sports Writers’ Assocation on January 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J. Prachniak led the baseball team to its first NCAA championship title in school history. The title was only the second NCAA championship for a men’s sport at West Chester University with the first being the men’s soccer crown in 1961. The 2012 campaign was Prachniak’s first year as head coach, and the team tied the single-season record for wins with 46 that was established in 2009. The…

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper recently selected West Chester University as its preseason No. 1-ranked program heading into the 2013 campaign. It marks the first time in program history that West Chester has been preseason ranked No. 1 by any media or coaches' poll. The defending national champions earned 628 points, outdistancing national runner-up Delta State (614 points). The Golden Rams topped the Statesmen, 9-0, in the NCAA Division II title game last June to pick up the school's first national title in baseball while becoming the first team from the state of Pennsylvania to win an NCAA baseball championship at any level. Senior Alexandra Lennon posted her second double-double of the season, but it was not enough for host West Chester to overcome No. 11 Holy Family, 72-61, in a non-league women’s basketball contest inside Hollinger Field House Sunday afternoon. West Chester (5-4) trailed by just one point at the half. However, Holy Family (12-1) pulled away in the final 13 minutes to claim the victory. Lennon made a layup with 27 seconds left in the first half to pull West Chester within one, 33-32, at the break. The following is a press release from the West Chester University Athletic Department. Three West Chester Golden Rams were named All Super Region 1 it was announced Thursday afternoon. Sophomore LB Ronell Williams was a first-team selection while RB Rondell White and PK Shawn Leo were second-team picks. The Daktronics, Inc., All-Super Region 1 squad is voted upon by the sports information directors in four different conferences (CIAA, Northeast 10, PSAC and WVIAC). The first team selections move on to the national ballot for a chance to become an All-American. Top-ranked West Chester University scored three goals in the first half and two more in the second half and successfully defended its NCAA Division II Field Hockey championship with a 5-0 shutout over host UMass-Lowell Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field. Junior RB Rondell White shattered the school’s single-season rushing record with his fourth 200-yard rushing performance of the season, and PK Shawn Leo tied his own school record with four field goals, helping West Chester (7-4) to a 33-12 victory over host Clarion (4-7) Saturday afternoon. White rushed for a season-high 227 yards on 38 carries and scored one touchdown to lead the Golden Rams to the win. He finishes the year with 1,548 rushing yards, which bested former WCU RB Mike Eckmeyer’s 1,539 yards rushing in 2002.
