Todd and Amy began volunteering in 2005 to make the annual parade a must-see event in downtown West Chester as a way to give back to the community. First, they focused on the Christmas tree. Since then, attendance at the parade has grown from about 5,000 spectators to over 20,000. In 2009, USA Today listed the …

Karen Cavin, owner of The 5 Senses on West Market Street in West Chester,  will celebrate the seventh anniversary of the shop opening on May 4. “When I first opened, this street was pretty much dead,” Cavin said.  “There was Kaplan’s, The Painted Plate and me, but I could see the potential. Now we have Green Street Consignments, Carlino’s, Pietro’s Prime, Spice and Main Line Custom.” After 30 years in graphic design, Cavin decided she wanted to open a shop featuring functional art & gifts. “I closed my graphics business because it wasn’t fun anymore,” Cavin said.  “My background is in art, and I wanted to get back to that.  I enjoy running the shop more than graphic design.  Running the shop is more creative.” The word Cavin uses to …

GWCC Names Citizen of the Year

The Greater West Chester Chamber has named its citizen of the year for 2012.

Growing up in the tightly–knit community of Malvern, James E. McErlane learned early that getting involved was a way of life. His parents were active in church and community organizations. His mother, the daughter of Italian immigrants, used her fluency in the language to help Italian newcomers to the area. His father was a member of Malvern Borough Council and served on the local Boy Scout Troop 7 Committee. No surprise then that Jim has made a habit of service to a multitude of organizations in the Greater West Chester area and beyond. From the small to the sprawling, from the recently-launched to the long-established, he has given his time and talent to health, education and business organizations including Community Volunteers in …

Chester County Food Bank Named 2012 Business of the Year

The Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce has named the Chester County Food Bank the 2012 Business of the Year.

Press release used courtesy of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce. Given Chester County’s standing as one of the most affluent counties in the state, it’s often hard to believe hunger exists within its boundaries. The reality is, however, that some 70,000 residents struggle daily to have enough food to eat. The Chester County Food Bank was established in 2009 to help provide food for those in need in Chester County and to focus on hunger’s role in poverty, health and education. Since its inception, the Food Bank has distributed over 1,200,000 pounds of food each year. The food is donated to over 65 organizations including food cupboards, meal sites and other non-profits that help feed the hungry and/or distribute the food items. …
