Henderson Conquers Downingtown East

Senior captain T.J. White leads the way as Henderson wins, 59-47

WEST CHESTER – Usually, it’s the McCormick twins who are co-catalysts when the Henderson High School Basketball Team takes control of a game enroute to another win. Chas and Jason are double trouble, opponents know it and there is still not much they can do. Tuesday night, though, the patented Henderson surge was keyed by senior captain T.J. White, who had seven points and one big assist in the decisive run as the Warriors chalked up their fourth straight win, 59-47, in the long-awaited home opener at Henderson. After eight games on the road, the Warriors finally had the comfort of their homecourt, moving to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Ches-Mont National Division with a couple of more road games on tap this week. Thursday, Henderson visits …

Home game was nice to have and a win was even nicer. Thought I was in the wrong gym though because I couldn't find the team at their usual bench. Maybe the change in scenery (I heard just like the old days) will get us a few more wins. I did know who the players were from that beautiful program they were giving out for free at the front door. Nice work. Great article and pictures. Keep them …   more ›

Vikings fall, Cougars win Ches-Mont

The West Chest East Vikings baseball team fell to Downingtown East Monday in Downingtown, 5-4, in a contest that pitted the two teams tied for first against one another.

The fate of the Ches-Mont – in a de-facto Ches-Mont title game of sorts -- wasn’t sealed until the last pitch of the last out of the game of the season. And what a season it’s been for the Downingtown East Cougar baseball team. Both West Chester East and Downingtown East came into Monday’s contest tied for first in the league, but the Cougars sealed their first-ever Ches-Mont title with a 5-4 victory over the Vikings in Downingtown. “For us it was a long haul,” Cougars coach Jim Freeman said. “Over the past six-or-seven years we’ve had some not good teams. Now it’s become a decent team, a solid team. It feels like we got a monkey off our back.” Downingtown jumped on the Vikings and put up five runs in the first inning. Cougar coach Freeman…

Rustin Girls Lacrosse Comes Up Short in Upset Bid

West Chester Rustin overcame an early five-goal deficit, but a last-minute goal by Kelly Devlin lifted still-unbeaten Downingtown East, 15-14, Thursday in West Chester.

The Rustin girls lacrosse sideline was full of smiles and laughter, pats on the back and congratulations aplenty. Never mind that the team just lost on a final-minute goal. Rustin (2-3) came back from a five-goal deficit early and later scored three goals in the final 2:30, but the effort wasn’t enough as the Golden Knights fell to Downingtown East (6-0) Thursday morning in West Chester, 15-14. “I have to give the girls credit. They didn’t hang their heads,” Rustin coach Laura Capuano said. “They didn’t give up. They came back and fought for every goal, every ground ball, every defensive position. I’m very proud of them.” Capuano’s team had every reason to hang their heads early on Thursday. The Golden Knights dominated possession of the …

West Chester East falls in battle for first

West Chester East lost to Downingtown East, 8-6, sending the team into a three-way tie for first in the division.

Halfway through the season, the race for the Chest-Mont baseball crown is still just as blurry as it was at season’s start. Behind pitcher Matt Ternowchek’s complete game effort, Downingtown East pulled into a three-way tie for the Chest-Mont National Division lead Wednesday after handing the West Chester East Vikings their first loss of the season, 8-6, in West Chester. With the loss to the Cougars, West Chester East (9-1) fell back even in the standings with Downingtown East (9-1) and West Chester Henderson (8-1). “It’s the Chest-Mont league,” Vikings coach Dean Owens said following the loss. “You can’t expect to run away with it. It’s never going to happen.” While the divisional race remained tight, more than once Downingtown East …
