In Need, East Takes Down Henderson, 46-42

Senior night, rivalry, tourney hopes inspire Vikings.

The West Chester East High School basketball team used a triple dose of motivation to fashion a tight and tough performance Thursday night in knocking off Henderson, 46-42, before a raucous, senior night crowd at the winners’ gym. The entertaining student section stormed the court at the buzzer as the Vikings knocked off their cross-town rivals, hitting all of their first 11 free throws and generating steals and stops in big spots all night long.  The result likely assured East a spot in the District I post-season tournament and locked up intra-city bragging rights over the Warriors until the two teams meet again next season. “Tonight was a playoff game for us,” East coach Eric Anderson stated flatly about being on the bubble for one of 32…

D-West Drops Henderson in Must Win Game

Tenacious zone, off-night does in Warriors, 45-31

The Downingtown West High School basketball team held normally high-scoring Henderson to just 14 points over the final three quarters enroute to a much-needed, 45-31 victory to keep hope alive for a District I Tournament playoff spot in Ches-Mont National Division action Tuesday night at Henderson. The Whippets had plenty at stake and played like it through the final 25 minutes, suffocating the Warriors with a tenacious, tight zone on a night when even the easy shots often produced by Henderson’s vaunted running game rolled off the rim. With their Ches-Mont Final Four spot locked up, the Warriors had less to play for but the loss will hurt their District I seeding as post-season play approaches.  Now 13-8 overall and 8-3 in the Ches-Mont …

Henderson Defeats Avon Grove, 56-47

Kane, McCormicks, free throws key to season’s 13th victory.

Declan Kane continued his late-season surge and the McCormick twins delivered their usual offensive production as the Henderson High School basketball team defeated Avon Grove, 56-47, in Ches-Mont National Division play Tuesday night at Henderson. On a night when their offense was not clicking and their opponent was hanging tough, the Warriors established and maintained control by hitting 12 of their first 15 free throws in lifting their record to 13-7 overall and 8-2 in divisional play.  The Warriors now have a week off before the showdown on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at home against Downingtown West.  They will likely need that win to secure a berth in the Ches-Mont Final Four against the winner of the Ches-Mont American Division.  The regular …

Rochester's 39 Lifts Kennett Over Henderson

The Warriors drop an inter-division contest to Kennett, 74-69.

KENNETT SQUARE -- For the first time this season Saturday afternoon, Henderson dropped a nail-biter and also likely lost their hope for a District I Tournament home game, falling, 74-69, in a Ches-Mont inter-division contest at Kennett High School’s Reynolds Gymnasium. Junior forward Maalik Rochester was on fire, hitting nine threes and totaling 39 points in an offensive display that had the Warriors coaches and players shaking their heads.  He scored 17 points in the first nine minutes of the game as the Blue Demons grabbed a 24-12 lead and his steal and individual fast break in the third quarter ended up as the turning point of the game. “You can plan all day and night and you’re not going to stop a shooter when he’s on like that,” …

Henderson Conquers Downingtown East, Again, 68-58

P.J. Costello's deep shooting help push Henderson to another Ches-Mont win.

WEST CHESTER – The last time that Henderson squared off with Downingtown East, it was senior captain T.J. White who complemented the McCormick twins in the delivery of another Ches-Mont National Division victory.  But White is out for the year with a back problem and that scoring void is no small matter for a Henderson team with post-season aspirations. Enter P.J. Costello.  Thursday night at Downingtown East, the senior guard had 13 points, including the only three threes that Henderson tallied, to provide the extra punch that the Warriors needed to secure a  68-58  league victory and improve to 7-2 there and 12-6 overall. Two of those threes came in the first quarter, when Henderson established a 19-11 lead that set the tone in a …

Twins Help Henderson Survive Shanahan, 63-61

Key league win lifts Warriors to 11-6 overall.

As the Henderson High School basketball team hits the home stretch these next three weeks, the focus is on elongating a season and defining its success with post-season opportunities.  The Warriors have their eye on the Ches-Mont Final Four and the District I Tournament but there is no margin for error at this late date. That’s why Tuesday night’s 63-61 homecourt victory over Bishop Shanahan was one of those welcome cases of survival and relief.  It could have gone the other way and that would have been a loss that had consequences. “We can’t afford to lose any more games,” offered Henderson coach Chris Bruno after his team moved to 6-2 with the Ches-Mont National Division win and 11-6 overall.  “When we needed a stop we got the stop.  A …

Coatesville Too Much for Henderson, 78-57

Kane, Costello season highs not enough vs. Ches-Mont power

Senior guard Tymeir Miller scored 24 points, including a pair of three-point daggers from downtown, to spark Coatesville to a 79-58 victory over Henderson Thursday night at Henderson.  The victory put the Red Raiders in full control of the Ches-Mont National Division with a 7-0 record while Henderson dropped to 5-2 with no reason to believe that any other team can take down the deep and talented team from Coatesville. In an entertaining confrontation of proud programs that relish the faster-paced game, Henderson was a realistic upset possibility until late in the third quarter behind Declan Kane, P.J. Costello and the McCormick twins.  But Coatesville’s array of offensive skill players combined with Henderson’s foul trouble and health …

Henderson Surges Past East, 60-49

Jason McCormick scored 31 to set up the rematch with Coatesville.

Jason McCormick’s unusual rise to stardom for the Henderson High School basketball team brought little more than a shrug from the player and his coach Tuesday night as the Warriors headed into the regular season homestretch with a 60-49 victory over West Chester East in a Ches-Mont National rivalry contest before another loud crowd at Henderson. He scored 31 points, including seven straight in a decisive, early fourth-quarter run, to lead the home team to its 10th victory in 15 games and a 5-1 record in the league.  The Warriors will try to avenge their only Ches-Mont National loss  Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., when they host Coatesville at the Montgomery Ave. gym. Amari Taylor scored 18 points and Eddie Anderson 12 for the Vikings, who …

Henderson Falls to Coatesville

Coatesville too hot to handle as the Warriors fall, 82-63

COATESVILLE  – As advertised, the Coatesville Red Raiders have speed, skills, defensive intensity and just enough patience to put almost any team in a tough spot, especially on their home court.  Henderson learned that the hard way Tuesday night, falling 82-63 to the team that may run away with the Ches-Mont National Division this year and make a run in the District Tournament. Senior standout Tymeir Miller scored 21 points and he and his teammates forced 21 turnovers with quick feet and fast hands as the Red Raiders finished off a tough five-game start to the season with the convincing victory over the Warriors.  They got it done with a second quarter surge that stretched a three-point lead to 17 on a variety of fast breaks, offensive put…

Denise: More details please. Perhaps not all "suspensions" result in disqualifications for sports. Did Coatesville High School violate its published rules? Or do you just think some types of "suspension" or "trouble" should disqualify a player when it really doesn't according to school policy? We cannot know whether or not your comment has any validity unless you provide more detail.   more ›

Henderson Routs Unionville

Chas McCormick scores 31 in the Warriors' first win of the season.

KENNETT SQUARE – The Henderson High School basketball team exploded into the win column Tuesday night, riding a 31-point performance from Chas McCormick to a 70-43 victory over Unionville Tuesday night at Unionville High School. Chas’s twin brother, Jason, added 18 points and the Warriors team defense was a major factor for the Warriors,  who continue their season-opening, three-week road trip with a 7:30 p.m. start Thursday night at Oxford.    Henderson will have eight games under its belt before the home opener January 3 against Downingtown East. “What worked tonight? Intensity.  It’s got to be our hallmark,” said first year coach Chris Bruno, who last chalked up a boys varsity head coaching victory back in 2001, when he was in charge at…
