West Chester East Falls to Spring-Ford in Districts

Spring-Ford softball defeated West Chester East, 1-0 on Thursday to advance to the third round of the district tournament.

The West Chester East softball team lost a heartbreaker to the Spring-Ford Rams Wednesday, 1-0. The Rams scored their sole run early. In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Cassie Alexy got on base with a single and advanced to second after a Liz Bauer sacrifice bunt. Marisha Bates was walked at the next at-bat and Deme Kanakis grounded out, advancing Bates and Alexy to second and third. Bri Kofer came up to the plate next and was able to drive Alexy home on an RBI-single to left. After the game, East coach Chuck Lindsay had nothing but good things to say about his players as the season came to an end. "We play good defense. That's kind of a hallmark of our team. This is a great senior class I've had. My pitcher, my catcher, my first …

Henderson hands Shanahan first loss

The West Chester Henderson softball team took down previously unbeaten Bishop Shanahan Friday in a contest that saw just two hits combined.

Before Friday’s game, Henderson softball coach Eric Fisher gathered his team around him and unfolded a newspaper article. The newspaper clip was about Friday’s opponent, Bishop Shanahan, and how the Eagles should have “easy sailing” on their way to an undefeated season. “I don’t know what that makes us,” Fisher told his team. “I guess we’re easy sailing. Let’s prove them wrong.” Fisher and the Warriors were anything but smooth waters for the Eagles.  West Chester Henderson (7-6) handed Bishop Shanahan (12-1) its first loss of the season, 2-1, Friday in Downingtown behind freshman pitcher Lauren Butts complete-game one hitter. “Great,” Butts said of the feeling after the win. “It was nice to beat them.” While Shanahan still remains the …

East softball falls to Shanahan

Eagles pitcher Kate Poppe tossed a complete-game shut out and drove in the contest's only runs as Bishop Shanahan defeated West Chest East Friday afternoon, 2-0.

Kate Poppe was expected to do it all Friday afternoon. Unfortunately for the West Chester East Vikings softball team, Poppe did, in fact, do it all. And then some. The Bishop Shanahan star pitched a complete-game, two-hit shut out, drove in the game’s only scores on a two-run bomb over the center-field fence and lead the Eagles (7-0) to a win over East (5-2) in West Chester, 2-0. “It felt really good,” Poppe said. “But I can’t do it out there alone. I need everyone. I need them making plays, I need them hitting and I need them up cheering.” Poppe, the junior standout with a full-ride offer to Villanova University for her softball skills, came close to doing it alone Friday. Poppe provided all the offense and defense Bishop Shanahan needed …
