Report: Supreme Court Throws Out Redistricting

The Associated Press reports that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has thrown out the assembly redistricting plan.

According to an Associated Press Report, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has thrown out the state assembly's redistricting plan calling the plan "contrary to law." According to the Associated Press, "The justices voted 4-3 to send the plan back to the Legislative Reapportionment Commission, and the majority said their opinion in the case, laying out the reasoning, would be released later." West Chester Mayor Carolyn Comitta had this to say in an e-mail, "Our great appreciation goes out to our attorney extraordinaire, Sam Stretton, for donating his valuable time and incredible expertise to help us fight for the voters of West Chester." Stretton had filed a petition on behalf of residents of both West Chester and Phoenixville to prevent both …

PA Supreme Court Hears Petitions on Redistricting

Chester County lawyer Sam Stretton argues against the current legislative redistricting plan for West Chester.

Chester County lawyer Sam Stretton made his case before the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court Monday to petition the court to overturn the currently approved legislative redistricting plan for West Chester. “It’s a violation of constitutional requirements,” Stretton said.  “For 200 years West Chester has almost always been in one district, now the county seat will be placed in a district that is predominately Chester County.” Under the current plan, West Chester would be split into two separate legislative districts, the 160th and 156th. Stretton also argued that the new plan disenfranchises minority voters in the borough. “Thirty percent of the borough’s voters are minority voters,” Stretton said.  “Under this plan, a third of them are …
