PA Turnpike To Add Car Charging Stations

Locations along the Pennsylvania Turnpike will offer spots to 'plug in.'

This summer, drivers along the Pennsylvania Turnpike will find at least four rest stops to be "electrifying." The Turnpike Commission announced recently that four new charging stations will be installed this summer for electric cars. One of those new charging station scheduled to be added along the Pennsylvania Turnpike is at the King of Prussia rest stop gas station, according to the Lancaster New Era. The additions are a part of a $2.5 million project by the commission. Renee Vid Colborn, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, told the Era that a "fill-up" will cost "anywhere between $2 and $5, depending on the charging station we put in and the utilities."  For the full story on the summer project, visit the full …

Turnpike Scheme Cost Pa. Taxpayers $108 Million, Auditor General Says

Interest rate swaps by Pa. Turnpike Commission cost taxpayers and motorists at least $108.9 million, according to Pa. Auditor General Jack Wagner

The following press release was provided by the Pa. Auditor General: Auditor General Jack Wagner said that an audit released Wednesday of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has found that the turnpike’s involvement in interest-rate swaps has cost Pennsylvania taxpayers and turnpike motorists at least $108.9 million. Turnpike tolls rose Jan. 6  Wagner said the turnpike’s strategy was to use the swaps to save money, but it has instead proved to further saddle the debt-ridden commission by not using conventional fixed-rate bonds to finance its debt. Under Act 44, a Lease and Funding Agreement was entered into by the turnpike and PennDOT, which requires the turnpike to pay PennDOT $450 million a year, or nearly $24 billion, over a period of …

It is gambling. It is speculative investment. It is legal because there is no law or regulation against it when it comes to taxpayers' or others' money. It appears that such risky speculation is OK in the minds of legislators.   more ›

Turnpike Tolls to Increase in 2013

E-ZPass trips will cost 2% more, cash trips 10% more. What's your reaction? Tell us in the comments below.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) announced Friday afternoon that it had approved toll increases for 2013. Starting Sunday, Jan. 6, drivers will see a 10 percent increase if paying cash, or 2 percent if paying through an E-ZPass account. The new rates are projected to bring in 3 percent more revenue and nudge drivers toward the E-ZPass system. Drivers paying electronically with E-ZPass will pay 25 percent less than those who pay in cash, up from 17 percent in 2012, and the annual fee will drop from $6 to $3 for noncommercial customers. “Implementing this toll increase generates the needed revenue to satisfy our annual transportation-funding obligation of $450 million to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, while at the same time …

Turnpike Commission Approves 2012 Toll Increase

Cash tolls will increase by 10 percent, while E-Z Pass tolls will stay the same.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission approved a 2012 rate plan that includes a 10-percent toll increase for cash-paying customers but no rate increase for those who pay with E-ZPass, according to a release. “Implementing a cash-only toll increase generates the revenue we need to satisfy our annual funding obligation to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it encourages more travelers to sign up for E-ZPass,” said Turnpike Commission Chief Executive Officer Roger E. Nutt said in the statement. On January 1, 2012, cash rates will be increased by 10 percent. The increase will be applied to all vehicle classes on all turnpike sections in the area. With the new rates, the most-common cash toll for passenger vehicles will increase from $1.10 to…
