One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. Prosecutors say Robert Landis' blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit.
Robert Elwood Landis, 49, has been ordered to stand trial for second degree homicide, manslaughter, DUI and multiple other charges related to a two vehicle accident that prosecutors say claimed the life of Liam Crowley of Chesterbrook, Tredyffrin Township. Crowley, who was 24, died two days after his motorcycle slammed into a pick-up truck in the northbound lanes of Wilmington Pike/Route 202 and East Stanton Road in Westtown Township. Prosecutors said Landis, of West Chester, was drunk and driving on a suspended and expired license, when he turned left to cross northbound 202 from the southbound lanes onto Stanton Avenue. Judge tells Robert Landis 'this should have been done before' then sets bail at $1 million.
As Liam Crowley's devastated mother, father and girlfriend looked on Tuesday, District Court Judge William Kraut ordered Robert Elwood Landis held on $1 million cash bond in Crowley's death. Landis, who has five prior DUI convictions, is charged with multiple felony, misdemeanor and summary offenses in the death of 24-year-old Liam Crowley, of Chesterbrook, Tredyffrin Township. Crowley died after a pick-up truck that prosecutors said was driven by an intoxicated Landis struck his motorcycle on Route 202 in Westtown at about 10:30 p.m. on April 26. The district attorney says drunken driving on Route 202 caused a 'senseless' death.
A 49-year-old West Chester man is facing homicide by vehicle charges following an accident on Route 202 that took the life of a motorcyclist in Westtown on April 26. Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan said Robert Elwood Landis was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.28 percent, more than three times the legal limit at the time of the crash which killed 24-year-old Liam Crowley of Chesterbrook in Tredyffrin Township. "Anybody who drives drunk is in danger of killing another person. Getting behind the wheel of a pickup truck at night on the highway with this much alcohol in your system is like firing 5,000 pound bullet into a crowd of people," Hogan said. West Goshen Police found the defendant in the store's parking lot at 3:41 a.m.
A 32-year-old West Chester man was charged with DUI in April after West Goshen Police say they found him slumped over the wheel of his car in a Wawa parking lot. On April 12 at 3:41 a.m., police were on patrol in the area of the Wawa convenience store located at 1195 Pottstown Pike, when they saw the defendant leaning over the steering wheel of his car. The man smelled like alcohol and consented to and failed a series of field sobriety tests, police say. He was charged with DUI and taken to Chester County Hospital to have blood drawn for testing.
