Statistics from AAA show road deaths are up among 16- and 17-year-olds nationwide, but not in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania's recent decrease in driving deaths among 16- and 17-year-olds bucked a nationwide increase of 19 percent, AAA Mid-Atlantic announced Tuesday. In the first six months of 2012, six Pennsylvania drivers of those ages died in accidents, down from 10 in the first six months of 2011, according to AAA. Throughout the United States, the toll rose from 202 to 240. This past week has seen gas prices jumping more than two digits in many areas of the country, including the Philadelphia area, according to AAA. AAA attributes the price jump to a rise in crude oil prices and some refineries closing for good or for maintenance. They call this week-over-week spike the most dramatic in nearly two years. In West Chester Patch, the best price is $3.48 at Lukoil on Wilmington Pike, according to Patch’s commute report. Here are the average gas prices from February 5, according to AAA:

AAA reports nearly double the number of emergency calls as last year.
You aren’t the only one feeling the cold. Your car is too. AAA Mid-Atlantic reported that on Tuesday it responded to nearly double the number of battery calls it had on the same day last year. Batteries are the biggest reason motorist call during a cold spell, according to AAA. “When temperatures plummet, automotive failures skyrocket. We know that the severe cold will cause calls to AAA for jump starts and frozen locks increase tremendously, but most of these calls are preventable with appropriate maintenance,” said Jenny M. 2012 was an expensive year to drive.
If you found your wallet a little lighter at the end of 2012, your driving may have something to do with that. AAA reports that 2012 was the most expensive year on record for gas prices with a national average of $3.60. The year before, 2011 takes second place with an average of $3.51 and 2008 comes in third with an average of $3.25. “Record high gas prices have made this the most expensive year yet for motorists,” said Jenny M. Millions will travel more than 50 miles for Christmas and New Year’s this year. See how many of them are from the Philadelphia area.
More than 1 million travelers from the Philadelphia area (or one in four) will travel 50 miles or more away from home during the year-end holidays, according the AAA Mid-Atlantic. That’s an increase of nearly 2 percent over last year. The year-end holiday travel period is defined as Saturday, Dec. 22 to Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. Many people are off from work the Friday after, giving travelers the opportunity to spend more time with family and friends. 1 in 10 residents of the five county area to travel, says AAA.
AAA-Mid Atlantic estimates that 400,000 residents of the five county Philadelphia area will be traveling this Memorial Day Weekend, despite gas prices peaking near $4 a gallon. The agency defines traveling as journeys of 50 miles of greater.
