Judge tells Robert Landis 'this should have been done before' then sets bail at $1 million.
As Liam Crowley's devastated mother, father and girlfriend looked on Tuesday, District Court Judge William Kraut ordered Robert Elwood Landis held on $1 million cash bond in Crowley's death. Landis, who has five prior DUI convictions, is charged with multiple felony, misdemeanor and summary offenses in the death of 24-year-old Liam Crowley, of Chesterbrook, Tredyffrin Township. Crowley died after a pick-up truck that prosecutors said was driven by an intoxicated Landis struck his motorcycle on Route 202 in Westtown at about 10:30 p.m. on April 26. The district attorney says drunken driving on Route 202 caused a 'senseless' death.
A 49-year-old West Chester man is facing homicide by vehicle charges following an accident on Route 202 that took the life of a motorcyclist in Westtown on April 26. Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan said Robert Elwood Landis was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.28 percent, more than three times the legal limit at the time of the crash which killed 24-year-old Liam Crowley of Chesterbrook in Tredyffrin Township. "Anybody who drives drunk is in danger of killing another person. Getting behind the wheel of a pickup truck at night on the highway with this much alcohol in your system is like firing 5,000 pound bullet into a crowd of people," Hogan said. The investigation into the weekend party that spilled out into a West Chester street is still ongoing.
West Chester's Police Chief said he expects "at least one" more arrest in the case of a party crowd that got out of control on South Walnut Street early Saturday afternoon. Chief Scott Bohn said he expected at least one arrest will be made and it "will be someone who was responsible" for flipping a private car on its side in the 400 block of South Walnut Street. West Chester Police broke up a party Saturday attended by a crowd reportedly numbering as many as 500. Party-goers had reportedly paid $15 each to attend the party in a private house near the West Chester University campus. Residents in a neighborhood north of West Chester warned to stay inside Friday night via a reverse 911 call.
An armed West Whiteland man surrendered after a standoff for several hours with authorities at his Scott Drive residence Friday night, according to the The Chester County Daily Local. Police received a report of the man who barricaded himself in the home Friday night at about 6:40 p.m., according to the article. Less than three hours into the standoff, the man was taken into custody, according to the article. The Daily Local said the man was taken to Chester County Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening, self-inflicted injuries. Flags are at half staff in memory of volunteer firefighter Robbie Miller who was killed in a motorcyle accident Wednesday night, according to colleagues at the Good Will Fire Company in West Chester.
