West Chester Women Clinch Second Seed With Win Over Cheyney

West Chester will host Millersville in the PSAC quarterfinals next Tuesday.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Alexandra Lennon posted second straight double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, as host West Chester sewed up the second seed in the Eastern Division with an 80-58 victory over visiting Cheyney in a PSAC women’s basketball contest inside Hollinger Field House Wednesday evening.
 
West Chester (19-6, 15-6 PSAC) locked up the second seed as a result of Shippensburg’s upset over Millersville Wednesday. Cheyney (0-25, 0-21) remains winless on the season. The Golden Rams now know that they will host Millersville on Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the quarterfinal round of the PSAC Tournament. All the seeds in the Eastern Division have been set. Bloomsburg will host Shippensburg in the other quarterfinal out of the East that night.
 
The Golden Rams ran out to a 46-24 lead by halftime, shooting the ball at a 58.3 percent clip (21 of 36). Meanwhile, the Wolves struggled from the field, making just 10 of 33 attempts.
 
Paige Elliott finished with 11 points off the bench. Kendall Benovy scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. Allison Hostetter and Jillian Keefer each recorded four steals in the contest.
 
West Chester concludes the regular-season portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon at Mansfield with a 1 p.m. tip inside Decker Gymnasium.
 
GAME NOTES: West Chester has now won the last 11 games in the series with Cheyney … WCU leads the all-time series 51-11 … the Golden Rams have now won 43 of the last 44 meetings with the cross-county rival Wolves … Alexandra Lennon blocked three shots … she now has 190 career blocked shots, which sits second on the all-time list behind Gina Tophoney (212) … Lennon scored 21 points in the contest, marking the fourth time in the last five games that she has reached 20 points … the win was the 78th victory for West Chester’s senior class … the Class of 2004 was the last to win 80 games in a career and average 20 wins per season … the Western Division quarterfinal round games have also been determined … No. 2 Edinboro, which lost its first game of the season on Wednesday, will host California (Pa.) while Gannon hosts Indiana (Pa.) … West Chester was ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll released Wednesday … the top eight teams in the region make the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament … West Chester is hoping to reach the NCAAs for the first time since 2003.
