West Chester Rolls To 59-14 Win

The Golden Rams run over Cheyney Saturday.

The following is a press release from the West Chester Universit Athletic Department.

Rondell White (Rustin) rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown, Brandon Monk (Msgr. Bonner) racked up 213 all-purpose yards and host West Chester scored a touchdown on its first seven possessions en route to a 59-14 victory over cross-county rival Cheyney Saturday afternoon at John A. Farrell Stadium.

The Golden Rams (6-3, 4-2 PSAC East) picked up the win over rival Cheyney (1-8, 0-7) on Senior Day. The starters left little doubt amassing a 49-0 lead by halftime.

In one half of work, White gained 110 yards on just eight carries and scored two touchdowns in the process. It marked the sixth game this year that he has rushed for over 100 yards in a game. He also caught a 21-yard TD pass from quarterback Mike Mattei.

The Golden Rams’ defense registered five sacks and held Cheyney to 230 total yards in the game.

West Chester opened up the scoring in the first quarter with a two and a half minute drive topped off with a perfect screen pass from Mattei to White for his sixth receiving touchdown of the year. The defense joined in on the scoring next when safety John O’Donnell returned an interception 70 yards for a TD, his third touchdown of the year, bringing the lead to 14-0. White extended the score to 21-0 with his ninth rushing touchdown of the year, a 20-yard scamper through the Cheyney defense. Moments later, tight end Justin Curry scored his first career touchdown with a 6-yard pass from Mattei to make the score 28-0.

Two Cheyney turnovers resulted in West Chester touchdowns in the first half. The first came off a fumble by Cheyney quarterback, Blaze Wasserleben, in the Wolves’ own zone. That miscue resulted in the first of two touchdowns from Golden Rams fullback, Jarad Bonaquisti. The second came off a botched punt attempt, that Cheyney punter Tyler Wilkinson was forced to run with, leaving the Golden Rams with the ball at the Wolves’ 8-yard line. Wide receiver, Nick Hall finished the first half scoring barrage with an 8-yard end around for a diving touchdown, the first of his career, making the score 49-0 at the half.

The reserves saw the bulk of playing time in the second half, highlighted by some electrifying runs from red-shirt freshman Monk. Reserve tailback Eddie Elliot added a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring. Cheyney would put together a pair of long scoring drives in the final quarter, finishing their day with 14 points.

Next week the Golden Rams travel to Bloomsburg for a crucial PSAC east game that has serious playoff and championship implications. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. inside Redman Stadium.
