West Chester Men Finish 5th At Cottrell Invitational

The golf team comes up short.

Austin Mann and Connor Lefever each tied for seventh individually. However, West Chester University placed fifth overall as a team at the third annual Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational at Penn Oaks Golf Club and its par-71 course that played 6,644 yards Monday morning.

The Golden Rams placed three golfers in the top 21, but only one of those counted towards the team’s overall score. Mann shot an 82 on Monday and posted a 157 for the 36-hole event. Lefever, participating as an independent, took one stroke off of Sunday’s total to shoot a 78 and finish with an identical 157.

Griffith Basehore shaved five strokes off his total from Sunday, shot a 78 and finished with a 161. He was 16th overall in the individual standings. Corey Smith, also competing as an individual, shot a 164 for the two-day tournament and placed in a tie for 21st.

Eric Slawter carded an 85 Monday and placed 24th with a 165. Dan Long shot a 167 for the tournament while Michael Ashcraft signed for a 173 to round out the Golden Rams’ team scorers.

Danny Walck shot a 167 and Ryan Fogel a 176 as individuals.

Indiana (Pa.) was the overall team champion for the third consecutive year with a 613 score. The Crimson Hawks won the team title outright in 2010, before tying host West Chester a year ago. Millersville’s Shane Henry carded a 74 on Monday to come from fourth place after day one and claim the individual title. He shot a 150 for the tournament, one stroke better than IUP’s Brad Boyle.

Mercyhurst’s Jake Pilarski finished third on the strength of a tournament low-round score of 72 Monday. He shot a 153 for the 36 holes.

West Chester will take part in the Cecil Spadafora Invitational April 15 at Indiana (Pa.).
