West Chester Drops Season Opener

The West Chester University baseball team starts off it's national title defense campaign with a 14-1 loss.

The following is a press release from the West Chester University Athletic Department.

Jordan Wlodarczyk homered, but it was not enough as West Chester University opened up its 2013 campaign with a 14-1 setback to host Lander University at Dolny Stadium Friday night.

The defending national champions mustered just one run on three hits and made one error while Lander (3-1) scored 14 runs on 13 hits and committed four errors to pick up the win.

Junior Joe Gunkel (0-1) started and suffered the loss on the mound. He lasted four innings, allowed six runs, five of them earned, on six hits and struck out four. Brent Roehrich, Ryan Swearingen and Ron Scull also saw action on the mound.

Wlodarczyk’s homer in the fourth inning made it a 4-1 ballgame. However, the Bearcats answered with two more runs in the bottom half and then stuck two more on the board in the fifth and five more in the sixth to break the game open. Lander pushed runs across the plate in every frame except the third and eighth.

Mike Raimo and Dylan Zigman had the only other two hits in the contest for West Chester.

West Chester and Lander will be back at it again at Dolny Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m.
