WCU Dominates Millersville

Golden Rams quarterback Mike Mattei throws for six touchdowns in a 54-14 win.

The following is a press release from the West Chester University Athletic Department.

Senior QB Mike Mattei tied a school record with six touchdown throws as West Chester topped visiting Millersville, 56-14 at John A. Farrell Stadium Saturday night.

Records fell all night long as West Chester (2-1, 1-0 PSAC East) opened up its league slate with a dominating performance over Millersville (1-2, 0-1), defeating the Marauders for the 10th consecutive season.

The Golden Rams rolled up 655 yards of total offense on 70 plays. It was the most yards against Millersville in the 80-year history of the rivalry and the fourth most in a game in school history. Mattei finished the day 16-for-20 for 358 yards and those six TD tosses. He becomes the fifth passer in school history to throw six touchdowns in a single game.

Senior WR Jim Kelly (Norristown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) also threw a TD pass to Sean Beahan (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) on a trick play in the second quarter. He was responsible for three scores altogether as he hauled in four aerials from Mattei for a career-high 95 yards and two touchdown receptions.

However, it was sophomore WR Erick Brundidge (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) who had the night of his life. He caught five passes for a career-best 156 yards and three scores. The track star for the Golden Rams caught a 43-yard TD strike and a 31-yard bullet in the first quarter and then added a 69-yard bomb in the second quarter.

West Chester scored the first three TDs of the game to step out to a 21-0 lead. Millersville fought back with a 22-yard TD pass from Ted Stachitas to Mike Jones early in the second quarter. But that was as close as the Marauders would get.

Jr., RB Rondell White (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) led the team in rushing with 131 yards on 24 carries. So., LB Mike Culbreath led the Golden Rams’ defense in tackles with nine.

West Chester travels to preseason favorite Kutztown next Saturday for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff against the Golden Bears.
