Tori Dugan Named PSAC Athlete Of Year In Women's Lacrosse
Five Golden Rams named to all-league squads.
The following is a press release from the West Chester University Athletic Department.
West Chester junior attacker Tori Dugan was named PSAC Women’s Lacrosse athlete of the year it was announced by that organization in its annual all-league postseason awards Wednesday morning.
West Chester landed five players on the three all-league squads, including Dugan and teammate Theresa Giunta being named first team recipients. Dugan was a second-team pick in 2011 while Giunta makes her first appearance on any all-league team. Junior Jamie Dolan and senior Erin Oczkowski were each named to the second team squad with each making their initial appearance on the PSAC all-league team. Senior Andrea Smith makes her second straight appearance on the conference’s third-team all-league team.
Dugan leads the Golden Rams in scoring with 81 points and ranks fourth in the PSAC and 14th in Division II. She has dominated faceoffs all year for West Chester, setting a school record and leading the PSAC with 118 draw controls and ranking fifth in the country in that category. Her 46 goals on the year rank ninth in the conference this spring while her 35 assists rank sixth in the PSAC and 16th nationally.
Dugan is the first West Chester lacrosse player to earn athlete of the year honors since Courtney Whiting in 2009. That ended a six-year run of Golden Rams garnering the conference’s top honor. Dugan becomes the ninth different West Chester player to be named the PSAC’s athlete of the year.
Giunta has started all 17 games this season for the Golden Rams and has scored 14 goals and assisted on three others from her defensive midfield position. She has 50 draw controls and 36 ground balls and has caused 14 turnovers. Her speed in transition has been vital to West Chester’s clearing game as well. The Golden Rams’ defense ranks seventh in the country (9.0 goals allowed/game) and third in draw controls per game (16.59).
Dolan ranks second on the team in scoring with 57 points. Her 40 goals scored is third on the squad. She has caused 23 turnovers from her midfield position. Her ability to ride opponents on their clear attempts keeps constant pressure on the other team. Dolan has also picked up 35 ground balls and secured 34 draw controls. She has four game-winning goals on the year and scored a season-high eight tallies in WCU’s win over Queen’s (N.C.).
Oczkowski ranks third on the team in scoring with 52 points and second in goals scored with 43 markers. The team co-captain leads by example on the pitch while putting up the numbers to support her all-league plaudits.
Smith, who was a third-team All-PSAC selection in 2011, led West Chester with 25 caused turnovers from her position on defense. She picked up a team-best 43 ground balls and secured 16 draw controls. Smith was a big reason the Golden Rams’ defense ranks seventh in the nation. She also managed to score a goal and pick up one assist this spring.
Julie Falk, a member of the PSAC champion Bloomsburg Huskies, was named freshman of the year while Huskies’ first-year head coach Erin Cunnane was named the loop’s coach of the year, after leading Bloomsburg to the tournament title as the sixth seed in the conference playoffs.
The sixth-ranked Golden Rams (14-3) travel to Gaffney, S.C. for an NCAA first round matchup with No. 5 Limestone College (17-1) at 12 p.m. on Saturday. West Chester is making its 10th NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament appearance in the last 12 years.
