Seventh Heaven For Golden Rams In Doubleheader Sweep Of Millersville

The Golden Rams win game one 13-1 and game two 4-3.

Megan Kelly went 3-for-4 with a home run and a pair of RBI in game one while Kelly Anderson was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run of her own in the nightcap as visiting West Chester swept a PSAC East softball doubleheader on the road at Millersville Tuesday afternoon.

West Chester plated nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open game one en route to a 13-1 victory. The Golden Rams stayed with that strategy in the nightcap, crossing four runs in the top of the seventh of game two that broke a 3-3 tie and capped the sweep.

West Chester (23-20, 4-6 PSAC East) was in desperate need of a conference sweep to stay alive in the playoff chase. WCU moved ahead of Millersville in the Eastern Division standings with the pair of wins. The Golden Rams also took the season series from the Marauders (14-26, 3-7) 3-1.

West Chester sent 14 batters to the plate and rapped out nine hits in the seventh inning of game one. The Rams collected seven straight hits after the leadoff hitter was retired. Abby Block hit a two-run double, and J.P. Norris hit a two-run single, her second hit of the frame, in the decisive seventh. Seven of the nine batters knocked in at least one run, and all nine scored a run.

Block finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI while Megan Kelly finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI.

Devon Utterback (11-10) went the distance inside the circle, scattering six hits and yielding just one unearned run. She walked one and struck out five.

In the nightcap, West Chester’s first three batters in the seventh reached on an error with two of those runners eventually coming around to score. Anderson hit a two-run single, and Jess Schuck contributed a bunt single. Anderson finished the game 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the top of the first that staked the Rams to an early lead.

Norris added an RBI double in the third and Cruts singled her home as West Chester took a 3-1 lead. Millersville tied things up with single tallies in the fourth and fifth.

Utterback started game two and went 1.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits. Kate Skokowski (6-5) went the rest of the way to pick up the win inside the circle. She allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out three.

West Chester returns home Friday afternoon when No. 5 Kutztown comes calling for its PSAC East showdown with the Golden Rams. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m.
