No. 8 West Chester Defeats Immaculata, 10-5

The Golden Rams move to an overall record to 17-1.

The following is a press release from the West Chester University Athletic department.

Jordan Wlodarczyk went 4-for-5 with a double, and Chris Pula doubled and homered, to lead eighth-ranked West Chester University to a 10-5 non-league baseball victory over host Immaculata University Tuesday afternoon.

West Chester (17-1) opened things up in the top of the third inning with five runs, four of which were unearned. That rally erased a 3-2 deficit, after Immaculata (5-11) had scored three runs in the bottom half of the second inning to take the lead. The Mighty Macs committed three errors in the frame that led to the four unearned runs.

Chris Pula hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot down the left field line, and Justin Lamborn and Jordan Wlodarcyzk followed with a triple and a double, respectively, all with two outs to make Immaculata pay for its miscues.

The Golden Rams added an unearned run in the sixth and one more in the seventh to push its lead to 9-4. Reid Pulford was hit by a pitch and eventually came around to score on an error by the second baseman with two outs. In the seventh, Jordan Wlodarczyk singled and moved up to second on a wild pitch. He came around to score on a single up the middle by pinch hitter Matt Kirchner.

Immaculata threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on second and third with nobody out by virtue of a walk and a double. However, West Chester pitcher Matt McAllister got out of the inning by striking out the Mighty Macs’ No. 3 and No. 4 hitters and getting a pinch hitter to pop up to short to end the threat.

McAllister (2-0) tossed five innings in relief, scattering four hits and allowing just one run to pick up his second win of the season. He walked two and struck out four. Alec Schwartz started the game and lasted two innings, surrendering three runs on five hits. Dave Stieg finished up the final two frames, striking out four batters, including Matt Bolden looking to end the game.

Immaculata leadoff hitter Joe DiGiaimo finished 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored. He knocked in one of the Mighty Macs’ three runs in the second inning. Joe Karbowsky (2-for-4) tripled in a run as well in the second.

Richard Cusic (1-3) started for the Mighty Macs and pitched seven strong innings. He allowed nine runs on 10 hits. However, only five of the runs were earned.

Wlodarczyk increased his hitting streak to 11 games while Joe Wendle saw his team-high 12-game hit streak come to a close with an 0-for-5 day at the plate. Wendle did reach on an error by Immaculata’s second baseman in the sixth inning that extended his streak of reaching base to 18 games. Wendle has now reached base safely in every game this season.

West Chester’s 17-1 start is its best to open the season in school history. The Golden Rams were 16-2 in 2008.

West Chester returns home Wednesday afternoon for the first round of the Bill Giles Classic at Serpico Stadium against University of the Sciences at 3:30 p.m. The winner of that game moves on to the Bill Giles Championship Game at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia next month.
