No. 6 West Chester Selected For the NCAA Division II Tournament

Golden Rams Travel to Limestone on Saturday, May 12.

The following is a press release from the West Chester University Athletic Department.

West Chester University’s sixth-ranked women’s lacrosse squad is NCAA-bound once again as the six-team field was revealed Sunday night on NCAA.com web stream. The Golden Rams will travel to Limestone College to face the No. 5 Saints on Saturday, May 12, at 12 p.m.

West Chester (14-3) is making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and will have a shot at redemption against Limestone (17-1), who defeated the Golden Rams in the national semifinals last year on the campus of Adelphi University. West Chester leads the overall series with a 6-3 edge. However, the Saints defeated the Golden Rams twice last season, including that matchup in the national semifinal.

West Chester is 12-7 all-time in nine previous appearances in the NCAA DII Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. The Golden Rams have won the national championship twice (2002, 2008). West Chester has reached the championship game eight times, including five straight years from 2004 to 2008. The Rams have never lost a first-round NCAA contest.

Rollins (15-1) earned the No. 1 seed in the South Region with Limestone and West Chester following, respectively at Nos. 2 and 3. In the North Region, LeMoyne (16-2) is the No. 1 seed and receives a bye to the national semifinals, along with Rollins. No. 2 Adelphi (16-2) will travel to No. 3 C.W. Post (14-3) on Saturday, May 12 in the other first round contest.

The 2012 women’s lacrosse championship provides for a six-team tournament. Two first round games will be conducted May 12 at campus sites. Winners of the first-round games will advance to the semifinals to play the No.1-seeded teams and final, to be played May 17 and 19 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky as part of the Division II Festival. Bellarmine will serve as host for the championship.
