Five Gymnasts Complete Competition At USAG Championships

Kaley LaFleur earns second All-America honors.

Kaley LaFleur earned second All-America honors with a seventh-place finish on the balance beam on the first day of competition at the 2012 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships inside Hubbell Gymnasium Thursday night.
 
LaFleur scored a 9.675 on the beam, tying Texas Women’s University competitor Bethany Larimer, and earning an alternate spot for the finals on Saturday. The top five individuals, including ties, advance to the finals. If one of those competitors gets injured, or otherwise cannot compete on Saturday, then LaFleur will take their place.
 
“Kaley really nailed her routine,” WCU head coach Barbara Cordova said. “All the girls represented themselves very well today.”
 
Freshman Stephanie Schuler placed ninth in the all-around with a 37.325. She scored a 9.5 on the uneven bars, a 9.525 on the beam, and a 9.35 on the floor exercise. Schuler placed 16th on the beam.
 
Emily Seigel placed 23rd on the bars with a 9.425, and added a 24th-place showing on the beam with a 9.35. Senior Alli Aquila scored a 9.3 on the bars and a 9.45 on the vault. Melissa Voskian scored a 9.475 on the vault to place 27th overall.
 
The host University of Bridgeport, Texas Woman’s University, the University of Pennsylvania and Air Force have advanced to the team.  The four team finalists will vie for the 2012 USAG Women’s Collegiate team title at 7 p.m. on Friday night at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.
 
Texas Women’s and Air Force advanced from the Thursday’s first team session.  TWU won the first session with a score of 193.625, and Air Force was second with a score of 192.300.  William & Mary was third (192.250), and Centenary (190.750) was fourth in Thursday’s first session.
 
Bridgeport and Penn advanced to the team finals from Thursday’s second session.  UB took first place with a score of 195.525, and Penn was second with a total of 193.900.  Temple was third in Thursday’s second team session with a score of 191.775 followed by Seattle Pacific at 190.800.
