Ches-Mont football titles will go right to the wire

With two weeks left in regular season, West Chester Henderson and Rustin control their own destiny

For high school football fans, it doesn’t get any better than the next two weeks.

Not only will Ches-Mont League division titles be decided but the jockeying for positions in the upcoming District 1 playoff hinges on what will happen the next two weekend. This week, six of the top 11 spots in the AAAA rankings were occupied by Ches-Mont League teams, an honor usually reserved for the powerhouse Suburban One schools. But not this year.

Taking a look at what can/might happen, starting with the Ches-Mont:

NATIONAL DIVISION

West Chester Henderson, thanks to its 21-13 win last Friday over Coatesville, stands atop the division with a 4-0 record. Right behind the Warriors are the Red Raiders and Downingtown East at 3-1. All have two league games remaining, which is where it gets interesting.

Henderson  travels to Avon Grove this Friday night to battle a Red Devil team that has struggled, then return to Dicks Stadium on Nov. 4 to host Downingtown East. Coatesville plays host to a Downingtown West team that was mashed by Downingtown East last week before ending its season with a trip to Avon Grove as well. Downingtown East hosts West Chester East this Friday before its date with Henderson next week.

If Henderson wins both its remaining contests, they are National Division champs. Provided they beat Avon Grove, a loss to Downingtown East  (should they defeat WC East), would mean at least a two-way tie for first. If Hendersom and Downingtown East end the season 5-1, the Cougars would be division champs due to the tie-breaker rule of whoever wins the head-to-head meeting will be champion.

But it gets more complicated. Coatesville could win its last two game as well and if Henderson loses to DTE that means a three-way deadlock, whereby all three teams would be considered National Division champions. That possibility would lessen this week if the Red Raiders lost to the Whippets.

AMERICAN DIVISION

West Chester Rustin leads this  division with a 4-0 record, followed closely behing by Unionville at 3-1.

The Golden Knights host a winless Sun Valley team at West Chester Henderson on Friday night then end the regular season next week with a trip to Octorara. The Indians, meanwhile,  head to Octorara this Friday then host Kennett next Friday.

Rustin can win the division outright with two wins or a Unionvlle loss in one of its last two games. Should the teams wind up tied, Rustin would be declared the winner on the basis of its 21-13 win over the Indians earlie this season.

DISTRICT PLAYOFFS

The top 16 teams will begin District 1 play on Nov. 11.  As of this week’s rankings, which are based on wins, strength of schedule, oppoents results and schedules, West Chester Rustin is third, West Chester Henderson is ninth. Unionville Is third, Dpwningtown East is sixth, Coatesville 11th and Downingtown West is 14th. The top eight teams are guaranteed a home game first round.

Henderson and Rustin are in good position to be playoff participants as is Downingtown East. The loser of Downingtown West—Coatesville is in danger of not being included in post season play.
