WCASD Holding Kindergarten Registration

The following is a press release from the West Chester Area School District.

Dear Kindergarten Parent:

Welcome to the West Chester Area School District! I am writing to inform you of the current procedure the school district has adopted to assign students to a kindergarten class. In the past, kindergarten students were placed in classrooms over the summer based on gender and age, with no consideration of ability level or social development skills. In essence, we did not have a chance to get to know any of our students before they were placed in a particular classroom. We want to make the best possible matches between students and teachers in order to maximize learning for every child.

To ensure we place students in the best possible environment, we would like to assess your child prior to starting school. We are inviting your child into school in June to complete a few standardized assessments and to take part in some typical kindergarten activities. The data collected will determine the best classroom placement for your child. This new procedure provides us with opportunity to get to know our students and to make what we believe will be better informed student placements.

An added benefit of this process will be the ability to identify students who may be in need of Extended Day Kindergarten. The Extended Day Kindergarten program is offered to students for whom additional academic support could make a positive difference in their early school performance. Please refer to the Extended Day Kindergarten pamphlet for more information about the Extended Day Kindergarten program.

You may schedule a June assessment time during Kindergarten Registration on Tuesday, February 26, Wednesday, February 27 or Thursday, February 28, 2013 at your home school. You may also schedule a June assessment appointment during evening registration on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Spellman Administration Building located at 829 Paoli Pike from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The June assessments will last approximately 30 minutes.

You will receive your child’s morning or afternoon kindergarten assignment from your school by the end of July. Specific elementary school assignments are based on attendance boundaries within the district. You will then receive, in August, the name of your child’s classroom teacher.
