Report: Penn State Tried to Hire Condoleeza Rice

The university is seeking a new president; Rice turned down the job.

It seems Penn State, currently searching for a new president, went after a big name last week.

Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice was approached by a search firm about the top university job, philly.com reported.

She turned it down.

Rice, who served under George W. Bush, currently is a professor at Stanford University, among other roles. Members of her staff confirmed that Rice was approached about the position, but said she has no plans to leave Stanford.

“Penn State is a fine institution,” Georgia Godfrey, Rice's chief of staff, told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “And Dr. Rice wishes the search committee the very best.”

Penn State has been led by Interim President Rodney Erickson since November 2011, when then-President Graham Spanier was forced to resign in light of the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal.
