Fern Hill Student Named a Finalist in National Art Contest

The student created a collage and wrote an essay about what math means to her.

received great news last week when it was learned that, out of thousands of entries, one of our students athas been selected as a finalist in the McGraw-Hill “What Math Means to Me” Art Contest. The young lady created a collage in art class inspired by the artist Piet Mondrian and she also wrote a short essay.

McGraw-Hill, sponsors of the contest, indicated that Fern Hill is the only school in the finals from Chester County. There were more than 2,400 entrants from across the nation, and there are only 12 finalists from each grade level! Such exclusivity is a sign of just how impressive the Fern Hill student’s artwork is in comparison to the many entries.

"This contest was a great opportunity for our students to make cross-curricular connections, which is vital for the learning process,” said Rebecca Eberly, Fern Hill Elementary School Principal. “In this case our students were learning and writing about math concepts in the art classroom. It was fascinating to them that math can be found in art. What a powerful discovery that turned out to be for them."
