Who Should Attend - Geared toward professional massage therapists, experienced yoga teachers, personal trainers and serious students/laypersons who want to learn a protocol to do Thai sessions on clients.

Please be aware that PA is currently undergoing changes in massage licensing regulations, and it is my understanding that currently one does not need to be a MT to legally practice Thai massage, but that can change under the proposed legislation.

Your Class Time - This class teaches a 90-minute session done on a floor mat with the client supine. Over 50 movements are taught in a progressive rhythmic sequence addressing most major muscle groups and joints. This class can be taken alone to offer Thai sessions immediately, or can be followed by Level II for the complete routine.

Have fun learning to perform a traditional comprehensive northern-style Thai massage to bring your clients relief from soft-tissue pain and imbalance. Use minimal effort while achieving maximum results. Thai massage uses compression and stretching with leverage and gravity to release muscle restrictions, open joints, soften fascia, improve alignment, harmonize energy, reduce stress, and bring greater joy and comfort to your client’s body. Basic Class teaches Front & Side-Lying Positions for a 60-90-minute session. Intermediate Class teaches Back & Seated Positions for a 1-2 hr session.

The teaching is based on the complete program as taught at ITM in Chiang Mai by its master, Chongkol Setthakorn. Class begins with the traditional Om Namo, ringing of the bells, quiet contemplation, yoga stretching and chi kung to prepare the body for giving and receiving.

Class is devoted to clear demonstrations of the movements, with time for discussion and questions. Students are led step-by-step through each series of movements, followed by supervised practice and review. Rose is known for her excellent teaching which creates a safe place for exploring this ancient healing art. She respects each individual’s style of learning, and feels it is important to have fun while stretching our boundaries and bodies.

About Your Instructor - Rose J. Griscom is the director and lead instructor at ITM-USA, and is one of the most experienced and respected Thai massage teachers in the country. She has been practicing and teaching since 1994, after study in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Rose is Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCTMB), is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and a past member of the Florida State Massage Therapy Association (FSMTA), and is an active member of the Thai Healing Alliance International (www.thaihealingallinance.com). She continues to travel around the country training Thai therapists at top spas and massage schools, as well as maintaining an active private practice in southern New Jersey. Contact her at www.thai-massage.org or 609-390-1016.

Your Textbook - Class includes the text "Nuad Bo-Rarn, the Traditional Massage of Thailand" by Arthur Lambert and Chongkol Setthakorn. DVDs and various support products for a Thai massage practice will be available for sale.

How to Prepare and What to Bring - Be prepared to work and be worked on. Some yoga mats are available, but bring a thick blanket or comforter, sheet, pillow, and pillowcase. Work is done fully clothed, so wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement (such as cotton pants and shirt), long pants preferred (no short shorts or skirts or jeans); bring layers in case  you get cool or warm. Have finger and toe nails trimmed short and clean feet; any cuts or wounds should be treated and covered. Eat lightly before class, as many of the movements involve compression of the abdominal area. Try to be well-rested and alert and receptive.

Continuing Education Credits - Class is approved for 35 CEs by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork as a Continuing Education Provider (# 152830), and by the Thai Healing Alliance International (THAI #1064) as an approved institution.
