District to Look into Consolidating Schools

The West Chester School Board will investigate whether or not to go from 10 elementary schools in the district to nine.

The West Chester School District Property and Finance Committee will continue to discuss “space consolidation” at Monday’s meeting as the district tries to decide whether or not to move from 10 elementary schools to nine.

Earlier this month, members of the school board met with the space consolidation committee to discuss the parameters of the process.

Superintendent Dr. Jim Scanlon said at last month’s property and finance committee meeting that if the district did decide to close one of the elementary schools it wouldn’t happen until 2015 at the earliest.

The district is considering closing one of the schools as a way to save money particularly on construction.

According to the school board’s timeline, a vote on whether or not to consolidate schools won’t be made until Dec. 17, and formal data on the matter will be presented to the school board on Nov. 26.
