Sober Saturdays

How to live a dry but not droll life in the wild, wild West Chester

There's nothing that infuriates West Chester's teetotaling residents more than hearing their town extolled as merely a drinking town. However as Patch's own Police Blotter feature illustrates, month after month the highest rates of arrest are for drinking related incidents like public drunkeness and D.U.I. The last time our town made national headlines was with a devastating, alcohol-related crash that cost us the lives of two of our citizens.

It may seem like a ridiculous question to pose, so allow me, void of shame, to be the one to pose it: What else makes West Chester, West Chester? And moreover, what do all the sober people do on Saturday nights? Yea, I just totally made myself look like a drunk by asking this, but I think the question begs to be asked. How many of my townie friends wonder the same thing, and when their ponderings yield no results, resign themselves to another night running a tab? I'd ask them, but they're all down at Jitters. (I mean really, who hasn't at some point been religious about Taco Tuesday? James' salsa makes mouths so happy.)

As life has carried on and my friends and I have gotten older, experienced important life milestones, moved away and returned, the party has raged on. The party may have mellowed a bit for some, and it's changed venues, but still it's going strong. I want to know, for those of you who have left said party (or deftly avoided it in the first place), what do you do? Where do you hang out on weekend nights? What are the rest of us missing? How can we all grow to rediscover what West Chester has to offer without booze taking center stage? In a town so rife with artists, musicians, athletes, and academics, what is the sober half up to?

I'd like to begin a regular feature that answers these questions and would appreciate your suggestions.
