West Chester Borough Council to Vote on Adding More Parking Meters

Borough Council is considering a measure that would add 108 new parking meters to the borough.

West Chester Council will vote on Wednesday whether or not to add 108 brand new parking meters in an effort to increase revenue in the borough.

The plan originated during last year's budget discussion, but it was floored in favor of a 20 percent property tax increase to cover the borough's deficit.

"When we raised taxes we promised we would revisit some of these programs during the year," said council member Jim Jones.

This is just the first proposal so far to increase borough revenues.

"This is one attempt to start bringing down blossoming costs for the borough," said council member Susan Bayne.  "This may help alleviate that 20 percent tax hike."

However, not everyone is onboard with the program.

"I'm all in favor of putting meters up all over the borough if they help the deficit," said council member John Manion.  "But I think this is just a band-aid."

Manion added, "This is just another user fee placed on our residents.  We need to shrink the beast, and I see no steps being taken to pull back."

Bayne added, "Each committee needs to look at a way to reduce costs.  We each need to take responsibility for a piece of that pie."

The proposal would add meters on the 300 block of South High Street on the east side, the 200 block of South High Street on both sides, the 200 block of South Church Street on both sides, the 200 block of West Miner on both sides and the 200 block of West Gay Street on the south side.
