West Chester Armory is a Big Step Closer to Becoming a Theater

The National Guard is moving out and a cinema and live performance theater is hoping to move in.

In what supporters are applauding as a major step forward, the Uptown Entertainment Alliance is moving closer to turning the current West Chester Armory into a movie and live performance theater.

In the closing hours of the budget bill debate in Harrisburg, the state Senate approved a bill to sell the armory to Uptown for $760,000.  The bill was pushed by state Sen. Andy Dinniman (D-PA19).  "I know the Alliance still has funds to raise and work to do to turn the building into the entertainment venue it wants it to be, but passage of this legislation is undeniably a huge step forward in the process." Dinniman is quoted as saying in a statement from the Uptown Alliance released through West Chester Mayor Carolyn Comitta.

Dinniman spokesman Adam Carucci told Patch that as of Tuesday afternoon Governor Corbett had not yet signed the bill, but the governor has until July 30th and is expected to sign the bill (HB1119) clearing the way for the sale to go through.

The Uptown Entertainment Alliance has more about the project on its website including how you can donate to the project.
