Shooting Range on the Agenda Again in West Goshen

There will be an update at Wednesday's supervisors meeting.

The West Goshen Police firing range will once again be discussed at Wednesday night's monthly Board of Supervisors meeting.

As construction continues on the temporary safety measures currently being installed, the board will consider bids to install the more permanent features, such as the stockade and chain link fences.

The township is alread in the midst of spending between $40,000 and $60,000 on temporary safety measures, while the permanent solution could cost as much as $300,000.

The new safety features will also include two concrete berms that be 180 feet long, three feet thick and nine feet tall.  The new design also calls for timber baffles that will start at eight feet of height and extend to 12 feet.

All of these measures are intended to keep bullets within the confines of the range and to keep out any unauthorized use.

Orignially built in 1962, the firing range met safety standards of the time; however, those standards have since become outdated.

Despite the outdated safety precautions there has never been an accident at the West Goshen firing range.

The permanent safety solution would include complete baffling and that the permanent baffles would be made of timber and steal instead of timber and stone.

West Goshen police officers have assured residents that the firing range will not be used until the installation of the safety measures is complete.
