Report: School Board Mulls Policy Change

The Daily Local reports the school board will change its public comment policy.

According to the Daily Local, the West Chester Area School District Property and Finance Committee voted unanimously to recommend changes to full board changes to the public comment policy.

“We have a real obligation to run our meetings efficiently and orderly,” board president Vince Murphy told the Daily Local. “This is a tool. It’s not meant to shut out your opinion, (it) just gives the presiding officers some tools to manage the meeting. I don’t see that as out of line.”

The policy was revised to allow the presiding officer of a committee to determine if a topic needs further comment. If no dialogue is opened up by the officer, comments will remain at the end of the meeting.
Board members have since made it clear they intend to accept a degree of comment at meetings.
“Historically, predating our involvement here, we’ve had a very engaged public and I would like to see that continue,” said board member Sean Carpenter.
