Public Works Committee Talks Trash, Again

The idea of privatizing the borough's trash service is investigated further.

The West Chester Public Works Committee met with representatives from A.J. Blosenski on Monday night as the borough continues to explore privatizing trash services.

During the committee meeting, council members asked the representatives from Blosenski about how a change in trash service would affect the borough.

Among the main concerns for council members were having the same drivers, missed pickups and cost.

The team from Blosenski assured council that the same drivers would work the same routes every week, and that there are measures in place at the other municipalities Blosenski services for missed pickups.

Currently, Blosenski is responsible for trash pickup at several local townships, including Westtown Township and East Goshen Township.

The borough is looking into privatizing trash service as a way to save money in the future.  During last year’s budget season, council had proposed a “pay as you go” trash fee to subsidize trash service that was voted down in favor of a tax increase.

The borough has not decided one way or the other on trash service, and the issue has not yet made it out of committee.

The public works committee will meet with representatives from Blosenski next month where council is expected to make a final decision.

During last month’s committee meeting, the borough opened the bids received by trash haulers and determined that Blosenski’s bid in the neighborhood of $350,000 was worth investigating.
