Public Works Committee Reports Saved Cash on Going Green

Borough officials report that switching traffic signals and other lighting to LED saved thousands of dollars.

While announcing several house keeping matters on recent changes in public works operations, the committee reported it saved thousands of dollars simply on replacing the way lighting was done.

Public works director Robert Wilpizeski announced Monday that the borough will be saving a lot more in traffic signal maintenance due to LED lighting that was installed in 2009.

"We cut our traffic signal electric bills from $29,000 to $6,000 per year," he said. "The project [costs] $60,000, so in three years it was paid for."

As a result, Wilpizeski said, less money will be spent on maintaining the lights, as it will not be necessary to change the bulbs as often -- which used to be yearly.

The contract to maintain lights is over $7,000 a year.

The committee also announced it earned several thousands of dollars from auctioning off old, unused borough property -- like vehicles and various tools.
