Governor Visited Siemens Tuesday

Governor Tom Corbett stopped by the company's East Whiteland offices and discussed the proposed state budget.

Governor Tom Corbett visited the Siemens campus in East Whiteland Tuesday, touring the facility and praising it as an example of an efficient business.

The Daily Local reported that the governor discussed how Harrisburg should support and learn from successful companies, a line of thinking reflected in his proposed budget:

“Like Siemens, we market ourselves to other states, other countries,” Corbett said. “We encourage other countries to bring business to Pennsylvania, hire the people of Pennsylvania, to grow jobs in the private sector and not grow public sector jobs.” [...]

Corbett then talked about his hotly debated $27.1 billion budget proposal, which closes a projected revenue shortfall of more than $700 million and reduces spending levels by $20 million but does not raise taxes.

Siemens released its own account of the governor's visit:

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett today used the backdrop of Siemens' U.S. Healthcare headquarters in Malvern, Pa to discuss his 2012-13 budget proposal, where he praised the Pennsylvania employer as an example of the kind of innovation state government must support in order to bring real job growth to the region. Siemens Healthcare is one of the world's largest suppliers to the healthcare industry and a trendsetter in medical imaging, laboratory diagnostics, medical information technology, and hearing aids.

The Governor hosted a Town Hall with several hundred employees, who help make up the nearly 4,000 professionals based out of the Malvern campus. From there, he was treated to a tour of Siemens' state-of-the-art Executive Briefing Center before addressing the media.

Governor Corbett reiterated his strong focus on job creation and economic opportunity, and stressed that state-funded institutions must find ways to lower their operating costs without passing along these increases to the public. His proposed budget closes a projected revenue shortfall of more than $700 million and reduces spending by more than $20 million, according to reports.

"By keeping taxes low and holding down government spending, this leaves more money in the part of the economy that creates the best jobs--the free market," said Corbett.
