Flu Widespread in Pennsylvania, Health Department Says

Flu cases have now been confirmed in at least half the regions of the state.

The flu is now widespread in Pennsylvania, with 1,159 cases reported statewide, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reports.

Flu seasons are unpredictable, but for the flu to be considered widespread, it means cases have been confirmed in at least half the regions of the state.

So far this season, through Dec. 21, the number of confirmed flu cases are as follows in the Lehigh Valley and Bucks and Montgomery counties:

  • Chester County: 18 Counties
  • Bucks County: 14 cases
  • Lehigh County: 37 cases
  • Northampton County: 38 cases
  • Montgomery County: 50 cases

Lab-confirmed flu cases represent only a fraction of those with the flu, state health officials say, since most people—including those who seek health care—are diagnosed without lab testing.

To better protect yourself from the flu—and the fever and body aches that go with it—health officials recommend getting a flu vaccine.

The state Department of Health’s website and the flu vaccine finder provide information by county or zip code as to where to get flu shots.
