With Prom Approaching, Police Stage 'Mock Crash' at Rustin

The students will get a first hand look at the tragic consequences of drunk driving.

Show, don’t tell, is advice most writers have gotten at one point or another. On Friday, Westtown-East Goshen Police will put this advice in action.

The department is holding a mock crash at Rustin Senior High School to give students a first hand, and violent, demonstration of what the consequences of drunk or distracted driving can be. With prom season around the corner, the demonstration will be timely as well as sobering.

The purpose of the mock crash is to give junior and senior age students, those approximately 16-18 years old a firsthand look at the potential tragedy that could result from impaired and distracted driving. The mock crash is presented in a way to offer as much realism as possible. The students are given firsthand experience of exactly what they could be responsible for, including killing someone, possibly one of their friends, as well as being arrested for crimes as serious as homicide by vehicle and the possibility of going to state prison for up to five years.

In this particular instance, the crash will be between two vehicles that are occupied by six high school students two of whom will die as a result of their injuries.

The victims of the crash will be portrayed by student actors from Rustin High School and the heartbroken parents who show up at the scene will be played by three professional actors.

The mock crash is scheduled for Friday at 8 a.m. on the property of Rustin High School, directly beyond the building.
