Police found 86-year-old Augusto Rivera strangled to death in his apartment Monday afternoon.

Philly.com reports that police found 86-year-old Augusto Rivera strangled to death in his apartment in West Chester on Monday afternoon.

According to Philly.com, police check in on the man after a friend couldn't get a hold of Rivera, which the friend said was unusual.

“The officers notified the criminal unit based on observations that the death did not occur from natural causes,” Police Chief Scott Bohn said to Philly.com, adding that an investigation is continuing.

An autopsy conducted on Tuesday indicated that Rivera was fatally strangled or suffocated.

According to Philly.com, Rivera’s death is the first homicide in the borough since a drug-related, fatal shooting in July 2007, Bohn said.
