Man Tackles, Restrains Hit-and-Run Driver, Police Say

A drunken Berwyn man caused several car accidents on Wednesday, Westtown-East Goshen police are reporting.

A 31-year-old Berwyn man was arrested on Wednesday after Westtown-East Goshen Police say he was involved in a pair of hit-and-run incidents in West Goshen Township.

On Wednesday at 1:06 p.m., Westtown-East Goshen Police responded to the area of Paoli Pike in East Goshen Township after they received a tip that a black Nissan X-Terra that was wanted for a hit and run accident in West Goshen Township was in the area. The accident occurred on Paoli Pike at Ellis Lane.

While searching for the X-Terra, at 1:11 pm., police say they received a report of a separate accident on North Chester Road near Highland Avenue in East Goshen Township. On the scene, police say they found a black Nissan X-Terra overturned in the woods off the roadway.

Police say witnesses told them that a man climbed from the Nissan X-Terra and left on foot down Highland Avenue away from the crash scene. Officers checked the area, and found another person holding down the driver of the X-Terra in the roadway along Highland Avenue. Police say the man told them that he chased the driver from the crash scene and—when the X-Terra driver threatened him and refused to stop running—he tackled the driver and held him for police. Officers say the driver was covered in dirt and had injuries consistent with the motor vehicle accident.

The driver had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and police determined he was the registered owner of the black Nissan X-Terra that was overturned in the woods on North Chester Road, police say.

The driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, accidents involving damage to attended vehicle or property, accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property, failure to give information and render aid, and careless driving.

While the defendant was in custody, WEGO police say they received another report of a hit and run accident that occurred just before the crash on Paoli Pike and Boot Road.  The victim reported that they were rear ended by a black Nissan X-Terra that pulled away after the accident, police say.
