Borough Looks to Begin Police Talks with Thornbury Township

The West Chester Borough Public Safety Committee recommends that the borough begin a preliminary discussion.

The West Chester Borough Public Safety Committee made a 3-0 recommendation to begin preliminary talks about contracting with Thornbury Township for police services.

“We’re only discussing starting the discussion,” said committee chair and borough council member Jordan Norley.  “I’m in favor of having the discussion, but it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll agree to provide police services.”

Thornbury Township recently rejected an offer from the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department for police services.

The Westtown-East Goshen Police Department wanted to put more of the cost burden on Thornbury Township should an officer be injured on the job.

Currently, Thornbury’s police services are set to expire on Dec. 31, 2012.

Thornbury was willing to extend its contract with Westtown-East Goshen for the price of $786,000.

West Chester Borough currently has a similar contract for police services with East Bradford Township, and that agreement has been in place since 1989.

“We’re only agreeing to enter in preliminary talks,” Norley said.  “Any additional cost would be factored into the negotiations.”
