18th Annual Brandywine River Cleanup

The Young Friends of the Brandywine Conservancy will team with the Brandywine Valley Association (BVA) on April 30 to clean nearly 35 miles of the Brandywine River and its banks.

The Brandywine is the drinking water source for the City of Wilmington and parts of New Castle County, Delaware.  Cleaning up the river and its banks is important to all who use, live near, or are affected by the Brandywine.

Both groups have organized successful river clean ups in previous years.  This year will mark the first time the two groups will clean up on the same day.  The BVA volunteers will cover stretches of both the East and West branches of the river in both Downingtown and Coatesville, while the Young Friends will clean from Lenape outside West Chester to Thompson's Bridge in Delaware.

The Young Friends have hosted an annual river clean up each April since 1994.  To date, they have removed approximately 25 tons of trash, including car batteries, ladders, a metal bed frame a surfboard, and hundreds of tires.  The BVA has been conducting clean ups for over 20 years.

"Our organizations are both dedicated to keeping the Brandywine clean and healthy," said Robert Struble, Jr., of the BVA.  "Working together can be a huge benefit to the community."
