Paradox of Greatness"

Abraham Lincoln's contemporaries knew little about this relatively
inexperienced candidate when he ran for president—and they had good reason to
doubt his abilities. But Lincoln became one of America's best known and most
honored leaders. This presentation by Commonwealth Speaker Roger Lane will
explore Lincoln's claim on posterity, which rests on his victory in the Civil
War as well as on the unique combination of his personal qualities, his
historical context and the American imagination. This
presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council supported in
part by National Endowment for the Humanities. The Pennsylvania Humanities
Council, a nonprofit organization, inspires individuals to enjoy and share a
life of learning.  Free admission.

sciences research professor at Haverford College, Lane has been named one of
the "Top Ten Profs" in the Philadelphia metropolitan area by Philadelphia
Magazine
. He has written several prize-winning books and frequently
appeared in television documentaries dealing with crime, the history of
Philadelphia and the urban African
