King of Prussia – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced that preliminary work will start Tuesday (July 31) on the $4.2 million project to improve travel on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in Charlestown and East Whiteland townships, Chester County.

PennDOT will widen Route 29 (Morehall Road) to provide an additional northbound and southbound through lane between Yellow Springs Road and Phoenixville Pike/Charlestown Road to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion. This part of Route 29 carries 15,000 vehicles day.

The improvements on Route 29 (Morehall Road) also will include five-foot wide shoulders; intersection upgrades and new signals at Yellow Springs Road/Warner Lane, Whitehorse Road and Charlestown Road/Phoenixville Pike; and storm water management facilities.

PennDOT’s contractor also will widen Charlestown Road from Phoenixville Pike to just south of the Charlestown Elementary School to provide an additional through lane in each direction and shoulders; widen Phoenixville Pike east of Charlestown Road to provide an additional westbound left turn lane; widen Phoenixville Pike west of Charlestown Road to provide a gore area opposite the dual left turn lanes; and widen Yellow Springs Road to add an exclusive right turn lane.

Construction is scheduled to finish by June 2014.

Initially, crews will clear brush and vegetation from alongside Route 29 (Morehall Road) and install filter bags inside drainage inlets.

Motorists traveling through the Route 29 (Morehall Road) construction area will face intermittent lane closures and possible slowdowns weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
