Safe Summer Travel Tips

Pottstown's local AAA expert gives useful information to make the most of this season's road trips.

Roughly 34.9 million U.S. residents will kickoff the summer with an out-of-town trip this weekend. Of that number, 30.9 million folks will drive 50 or more miles from home, said Theresa Podguski, director of public affairs for AAA East Central based in Allentown.

Inspect tires, including the spare, for correct inflation pressure, adequate tread depth and bulges on the tire wall.

"Insert a quarter into the tread groove with Washington's head upside down facing upward," she said. "If any area above his head is visible, it's wise to go tire shopping before you take a long trip."

Clean battery terminals and ensure a secure connection to cables.

Check windshield wiper blades and refill washer fluid. "If (blades) start screeching across the glass, it's probably time to change them," Podguski said.

Buckle up. Make sure infant and child booster seats are secure. State and often local police departments have trained staff to help ensure infant seats are installed correctly, she said.

Don't use a cell phone while driving. "We need to keep our minds focussed on our driving task," Podguski said.

Save gas. Make sure your vehicle has been checked over by a professional mechanic.

"Shop around online and try to find the cheapest gas in your area," she said. Check www.aaa.com for local gas prices.

"It's important not to load down the car," Podguski said. "The heavier items that are in the car will decrease your fuel economy."

Consider renting a car that gets better gas mileage than your car.

"It may actually save some money," she said.
