New Permit Parking Zone Added

Council approves an ordinance to make 400 West Miner Street a "by permit parking only" zone.

The West Chester Borough Council voted 6-1 Wednesday night to approve an ordinance that would make the 400 block of West Miner Street a “by permit parking only zone.”

Residents of Miner Street petitioned the council to help alleviate some of the parking congestion caused by Miner Street’s proximity to the county buildings located on Market Street.

“We have trouble parking everyday,” said Miner Street resident Carl Weir.  “We would like to alleviate some of that stress.  We also want to try to force the county to deal with its parking problem.”

Currently, the county has approximately 1150 employees working in its buildings in the borough.  However, the county only provides parking for 900 employees, leaving the rest to fend for themselves.

“Devoid of a master parking plan, permit parking is the only way to go,” said council member Jordan Norley.

Council member John Manion added, “It’s our responsibility to represent our constituents.  These residents have been patient, and they have come in good faith.”

Council member Chuck Christy was the only member of borough council to vote no on the ordinance.

The parking permit zone would be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
