Bridge Reopens on Route 162 in East Bradford

After a year of construction, the Copes Bridge reopens to traffic.

PennDot reopened the Copes Bridge on Route 162 in East Bradford Thursday, finishing work that began in January 2010.

Originally built in 1807, the stone masonry bridge was rated structurally deficient before construction began.

According to a press release from PennDot, Crews worked over the past year to rehabilitate the stone arch bridge by removing the existing roadway and fill on top of the structure; stabilizing the arches and placing concrete above them; reconstructing the stone walls and wing walls; and resurfacing the deck.

The bridge is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

As part of the $3.4 million project, road crews also improved the intersection of Sugars Bridge Road and Route 322 in West Bradford Township.  This was to alleviate some of the traffic that was detoured away from Route 162 and onto 322.

Prior to the bridge’s closure it had a daily traffic number of 10,900 vehicles.
