West Chester Growers Market Still Kickin'

The West Chester Growers Market meets the first and third Saturday of the month during winter.

If you’re committed to eating locally—or even if you’re not—you’ve probably visited, heard of, or at least driven past The West Chester Growers Market, on the corner of North Church and West Chestnut streets in West Chester. The market is in full swing from May through December, with a variety of fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses and pastries available for purchase from local vendors.

Does the market lie dormant, then, from January through April? Hardly. The market slows down during winter—with available produce consisting mostly of hardy winter vegetables—but vendors continue to gather on the first and third Saturday of the month from to sell their products to faithful customers.

“This is a very vibrant market,” supporter David Roberts said at Saturday’s market. “We have some very loyal people who come each week regardless of the weather.”

Roberts is not a grower himself, but he provides “transportation and an Internet connection” for Abram Stoltzfus of Windy Acres Farm, who was there selling eggs, scallions, carrots and a variety of other hardy winter vegetables.

The foods available at Saturday’s market included mushrooms and baby bok choy from Queens Farm, breads and pastries from Big Sky Bread, meats from Lindenhof Farm and a number of Amish delights—including whoopee pies and sticky buns—from Lizzie’s Kitchen.  (Take a look at some of the scrumptious offerings in this article's photo gallery.)

Often, vendors will sell other items as well, such as homemade soaps or wooden crafted products.

“By May, this entire lot is full,” Roberts said.

If you want to stop in and take a look at what’s for sale, the next Grower’s Market will take place on March 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the corner of North Church and West Chestnut streets in downtown West Chester.
